thewritelook for authors

You’ve spent hours at your desk, polished every word and phrase and now you are ready to submit that short story or poem to your favourite literary magazine or agency.

However, the last thing a commissioning editor wants is a poorly-presented manuscript. A manuscript that has a weird font, wavering point size, uneven spacing, or mistakes in grammar and spelling. And that story or poem you have toiled over ends up rejected, sometimes before it has even been read. A publisher or agent does not want to waste time trying to decipher your work when there are another 30 writers waiting to be looked at. Have a look at what these literary agencies have to say:

We receive at least 20 unsolicited manuscripts a day, our books are full and to be honest we are looking for reasons to say no – Carol Blake of Blake Friedmann, Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook 2015

Don’t send submissions that are badly-spelt, poorly-presented or ungrammatical – Andrew Lownie Literary Agency

thewritelook can solve these problems for you. We will lay out your manuscript clearly and legibly, so that it catches the eye and begs to be read. We will give you advice on submissions to various publications and tailor your manuscript to their requirements. For example, one magazine insists on submissions being in an 11pt font. Why that should be is up to them, but we will help you to avoid these pitfalls. What we do not do is give feedback or rewrite your work for presentation. It’s your baby….we dress it up to be bonny.

For this service we charge £20 an hour. For manuscripts which require a lot of work, we will discuss what needs to be done beforehand and inform you of how much it is likely to cost. thewritelook is a small business with a personal touch and you will be dealing directly with our copy editors.
